Burma Health Sector Strategy Study
Description: In December 1998, the Minister for Foreign Affairs introduced the publication Health in Australia's Aid Program announcing a new health policy for the Australian overseas aid program. The policy sets the framework for Australia to work in partnership with developing countries to improve the health of the poor. Health aid is a critical investment in development. As one of the few bilateral donors in Burma, Australia is uniquely placed to fill gaps in health sector needs through well-targeted interventions. Over the last 5 years, AusAID through the bilateral program has funded Australian NGOs to undertake primary health care projects providing basic health care services and HIV/AIDS control for around 300,000 people in diverse communities across a range of locations in Burma.Australian government will continue to address issues that impact on health of Burma's people especially children.
The objective of Burma Health Strategy Study was to develop a health strategy for the AusAID Burma Country Program that would contribute to poverty reduction through an improvement in the health status of the people of Burma. The strategy would also review needs in the Government health system in Burma and identify niche roles of Australian interventions in the health sector to address those needs. The study had three phases: (1) Background study in Australia (2) Mission in Burma and (3) Final strategy and appraisal in Australia.
